Piezo technology helps to analyze wounds

piezosystem jena’s 3D micro-positioning unit used during clinical examination of wounds


Especially for the use within a medical multiphoton endoscope piezosystem jena has developed a new 3D micro-positioning unit. For the first time, this technology is used in the project ”Woundoptomizer”. With the help of the piezo positioner a complex optical system is placed into the wound for micro-endoscopic examination with micrometer accuracy. Based on the information gained, essential cellular functions and local factors of wound diseases can be identified.

Existing examination methods have yet to allow the diagnosis of acute and chronic wounds in vivo. Conversely, the knowledge of the micromilieu of wounds and the evaluation of local factors are essential preconditions for targeted therapy to achieve rapid healing. It is hoped that the use of the latest imaging modality will give new impulses to the diagnosis and therapy. Therefore the everyday life of affected patients can potentially significantly improved.

The “Woundoptomizer” is a joint project of piezosystem jena in cooperation with the Clinic of Dermatology and Dermatological Allerology at the University Clinic of Jena, the Clinic of Dermatology at the University Clinic of Mannheim and the University of Heidelberg, Biolitec GmbH and JenLab GmbH. There is considerable potential for the ”Woundoptomizer” to be applied to individualised, diagnostic directed therapy.

The project was presented at the LASER World of PHOTONICS in Munich for the first time. Thereby, a ready-for-delivery prototype of the 3D micro-positioning unit could be shown to the audience before the end of the duration of the research project. The joint project ”Woundoptomizer” was supported by Germany's Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
