Product Spotlight October: New trigger functions


Digital controllers from piezosystem jena now have enhanced trigger capabilities. Offering better trigger signals than ever before.

There are applications where pure positioning is not enough, and additional operations have to be performed at certain trigger points, e.g. firing a laser pulse or the acquisition of a picture.

The standard procedure offered in systems usually triggers for a measured position value.  Here, the trigger impulse is sent when the measurement system recognizes that the set point is reached. Since electronic devices always suffer intrinsic sources of noise, the measurement system also exhibits this uncorrelated noise leading to two limitations:
 

  • First, the minimum trigger point distance is limited to approx. 0.05% of the max stroke.
  • Second, the positioning precision of the trigger value is decreased by the electronic noise.

  

piezosystem jena has now implemented a new possibility to trigger for the set point to bypass both of these issues. The achievable minimum trigger distance is reduced to only 0.01% of the maximum stroke. This is possible, due to the high positioning precision of piezosystem jena actuators in closed loop mode, the smaller noise set value is an equally good representation of the present position compared to the noisier measurement value. 

Even in high dynamic applications this new trigger mode is usable.Where the present position always lags behind the desired set value; since knowing the control pulse of the electronic, compensation for this lag is possible.
